Where WHOIS data comes from

Every domain is held through a registrar and recorded by the registry for its ending (.com, .org, .uk …). This tool reads the official registration data using RDAP, the modern replacement for WHOIS that registries publish directly. Since GDPR, most registrars hide the owner's personal details, so the owner usually appears as redacted; the dates, registrar and name servers are always public.

How to use it

  1. Enter a domain name, such as example.com.
  2. Press Look up.
  3. Check the registration and expiry dates, the domain age and the registrar.

Frequently asked questions

How can I see who owns a domain?

If the owner has not chosen privacy protection, their organisation appears as the registrant. Otherwise contact the owner through the registrar shown in the results: registrars must forward messages or offer a contact form.

Why does domain age matter?

An old domain with a long history is a small sign of trust. A domain registered a few days ago that asks for logins or payments is a common sign of a scam site.

What happens when a domain expires?

The website and email stop working. Most domains then enter a grace period of about 30 days when the owner can still renew, followed by a redemption period, before the name becomes available to anyone.
