What an IP lookup tells you

Every public IP address belongs to a block of addresses that a regional registry (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC or AFRINIC) assigned to an organisation. This tool asks those registries who holds the block, finds the network (ASN) that announces it on the internet, and checks its reverse DNS name. The country shown is where the block is registered, which is usually, but not always, where the address is used.

How to use it

  1. Type an IP address (IPv4 or IPv6) or a domain name.
  2. Press Look up.
  3. Read the owner, provider, network range and abuse contact.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is IP location?

The country is usually right. City-level location from any IP tool is only an estimate, and VPNs, mobile networks and cloud servers often show a different place from the real user.

How do I report abuse from an IP address?

Use the abuse contact shown in the results. It is the address the network owner publishes for spam, attacks and other abuse reports. Include the time, the IP address and evidence such as logs.

What is an ASN?

An Autonomous System Number identifies one network on the internet, such as an internet provider, a cloud platform or a large company. All of its IP addresses are announced to the rest of the internet under that number.
