What is a public IP address?

Your public IP address is the address your internet provider gives your connection. Every website you open sees it. All the devices on your home Wi-Fi usually share one public IP, while each device has its own private address (like 192.168.1.20) that only your router sees. Most connections now have an IPv4 address, and many also have a newer IPv6 address.

How to use it

  1. Open this page: your IP address appears straight away.
  2. Press Copy to paste it into a support form, firewall rule or game server.
  3. Turn a VPN on or off and refresh to see your address change.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone find my home address from my IP?

No. An IP address shows your internet provider and roughly which city or region you connect from. Only your provider can link it to a customer, and they share that only with a court order.

Why does my IP address change?

Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic address that changes when your router restarts or after some time. A fixed (static) IP is usually a paid extra from your provider.

How do I hide my IP address?

A VPN or the Tor Browser routes your traffic through another server, so websites see that server's address instead of yours. Refresh this page with a VPN on to check that it works.
